Bookbinding Tying Up Finishing Press – $335

This is a hand-made Tying Up Finishing Press (also known as a lying press) which comes with a stand.  It is made from laminated hardwoods with hard rock maple jaw faces and sloped shoulders. All surfaces are hard-waxed to a silky smooth finish.

The tying up fixture is an addition to the standard finishing press offered here.  This fixture is used for “tying up”, the forming of cover material around the cords on the spine.   A quick search of the internet will show that this a very useful item over the traditional method of tying up all around the book with all the protections needed to keep from denting the cover edges.      It has brass pins and the fixture comes off so you can use it as a regular finishing press.

Dimensions are approximate as these are made one at a time:

  • Between the sloped shoulders 14-1/2″ +-
  • Between the screws 15-1/4″ +-
  • Opening size 5″+-
  • Jaw height 3″ +-
  • Screws are 7/16″ ACME double-threaded steel threads

The handles are built to turn in opposite directions (one clockwise and the other counterclockwise) for opening and closing.  This change is different  from traditional designs to make this press affordable for you.  Many people find it is actually easier to use in this format.   Also, most traditional presses are made with wood threaded rods.  This increases the price considerably, and from what I have seen, the threads will eventually chip and break off, not to mention the problems with expansion and contraction from humidity, causing difficulty in turning the handles.  You can put tremendous pressure on these handles without fear that you will break something.

Included with this press is also a simple stand that allows the book to stand free of the table.  From the table to the top of the press is 9″.  This stand is removable for storage or to use the press alone.

You’ll be satisfied with the quality and functionality of this finishing press.  There aren’t many styles of finishing presses available on the market and none that come with a stand or the tying up fixture.  You’ll find through your searching that this is an exceptional value.

Larger and smaller sizes are available upon request.  I can also modify your finishing press to add the tying up fixture.  Tell me how I can help you on the contact form.
